Spatiotemporal Dispersal Study of Mangrove Avicennia marina and Rhizophora apiculata Propagules

چکیده

The propagule dispersal pattern of the two common mangrove species, Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. and Rhizophora apiculata Blume at a fringed coast, in southwest tip Penang Island was examined. Propagule study both species were carried out by release recapture method, while early developments observed an on-site tethering system. A. propagules recorded higher rate as compared to R. apiculata. After 60 tidal cycles, almost all had moved away from initial site under influence strong wave current. grow better faster than propagules. However, eventually failed establish due effect well unfavourable soil condition. found adopt different strategies growth. notably adapted thrive coastal environment. In similar open area, current condition are suggested be most critical factors affecting establishment.

Comparing the function of aqueous extract of mangrove plants Avicennia marina and Rhizophora mucronata in biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles

In this study, the leaf extract activity of two species of mangrove plants, Avicennia marina (Avicenniaceae family) and Rhizophora mucronata (Rhizophoraceae) was compared in biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The AgNPs were investigated using spectrophotometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Abso...

Chlorophyll-deficient propagules of Avicennia marina and apparent longer term deterioration of mangrove fitness in oil-polluted sediments.

A correlation between petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations in sediments and chlorophyll-deficient mutations in mangroves may occur also in Australian mangroves. Earlier reports of such mutations in the Caribbean area were evident in viviparous propagules of the common mangrove genera, Rhizophora, borne on otherwise normal trees. These mutant propagules were termed albinos' since they lacked chl...

Mangrove distribution and mosquito control: transport of Avicennia marina propagules by mosquito-control runnels in southeast Queensland saltmarshes

The saltmarsh–mangrove interface generally constitutes the landward boundary for the grey mangrove Avicennia marina var. australasica, the most widespread species on southeast Queensland shores. A. marina produces buoyant propagules, which are dispersed by tidal waters, only infrequently transported to saltmarsh by the highest spring tides. We predicted that runnelling, a form of habitat modifi...

Oxygen microgradients in the rhizosphere of the mangrove Avicennia marina

Oxygen concentration was measured in aerial roots (pneumatophores), horizontal cable roots and surrounding sediment of the tree Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. in a mangrove swamp at Ao Nam Bor, on the southeast coast of Phuket Island, Thailand. The O2 measurements were made in the field with a polarographlc oxygen minielectrode. The O2 concentration inside pneurnatophores was 63 to 88 % of ai...

Identification of Medicinal Mangrove Rhizophora apiculata Blume: Morphological, Chemical and DNA Barcoding Methods

"Kandal" (Rhizophora apiculata Blume) is a medicinal mangrove plant used to treat pain, inflammation and reduce blood glucose level in Southeast coast of India. Identification and revision of R. apiculata are largely based on morphological characteristics. Previously, we reported and filed a patent on anti-diabetic Glycosin from R. apiculata. Subsequently, for the quality and market authorizati...
